Escape from Iran commemorates the 25th anniversary of “The Canadian Caper”. It will take us back to this startling affair through the direct testimony of the Americans who found sanctuary with the Canadian delegation and the Canadians who risked their own safety to shelter their closest neighbours. November 4, 1979. Militant Iranian students seize the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. Sixty-six Americans are taken prisoner; fifty-two of them will remain in captivity for 444 days. Six Americans manage to elude the students by sneaking out the back door of the Embassy, only to find themselves stranded in a hostile country that is gripped by revolutionary fervour. Four days later a member of the Canadian Embassy staff receives a call for help from the desperate Americans. This call will take him, other Embassy staff and their families into the realm of Ian Fleming and John Le Carré, a world of political manoeuvring, international intrigue, forged passports and secret agents: a place in which the danger of betrayal and capture is ever present.
